Many of Hue’s famed old houses, which are a landmark of the city, have been badly damaged over time.

Ancient houses which are located on Chi Lang, Bach Dang or Nguyen Chi Thanh roads still maintain their antiquated architecture and have become very popular amongst visitors.

Unfortunately, these old houses are decaying. Their roofs have rotted and their walls have cracked.

A local living on Bach Dang Road said, “Houses here are over 100 years old and have been destroyed. We do not have enough money to restore them and do not know how to do it.”

Gia Hoi area, which covers Phu Cat, Phu Hiep and Phu Hau wards, is an island surrounded by Dong Ba canal and Huong River.

Gia Hoi Bridge was built during Minh Mang King’s time. Its name was given by the king in 1837. Gia Hoi Street starts at Gia Hoi Bridge and goes to Dong Ba Bridge.

Gia Hoi Ancient Street used to be a busy trading centre in the past. Many houses here have architecture as unique and ancient as houses in Hoi An Ancient Town (in Quang Nam Province) or Bao Vinh Ancient Street (in Hue City).
